End of the gardening season

It's getting to be winter so I had to remove all the summer vegetable plants. I discovered a new sage plant growing although it won't be big enough to enjoy for this thanksgiving, it will definitely be around for next year's. Parsley, rosemary, thyme, swiss chard, celery, asparagus, strawberries and some still blooming dianthys flowers are what remains in the garden. I used straw and wood chips as mulch to cover cardboard and large paper bags in the growing area.

Mid August Gardening

I pulled out the squash plant... It has given plenty of squash for the season and it was starting to mess with my peppers. I love peppers so couldn't have that.

Mid July Garden Updates

Some bug problems have crept up in the garden. We've had a LOT of rain this June.

Dill is flowering and attracting bees. Cilantro has seeded.

Huge squashes have been appearing so that's what we've been eating.

Here's another giant yellow squash... they are yummy sauteed with mushrooms and bell peppers.

The brandywine tomatoes are growing.

The lighter green bush at center is celery. I don't think I'll plant as many celery next year. I'll let these stick around and turn to seeds next year. The cucumber (at back on trellis) is showing signs of withering. We got to eat one cucumber off it so far... Hoping it survives this... I couldn't see any bugs on it.

Asparagus is still growing and hope to get some tasty spears out of it early spring next year.

Buying a bigger tomato plant from the nursery was definitely a good deal this year. So we'd get tomatoes earlier in the season. I think this is an "early girl".

This pepper plant is showing minor rust on the leaves. This may be because it's sort of shaded and we've had tons of rain this June.

Cempasuchil (marigolds): Looking forward to using these to decorate for Halloween/Day of the Dead

Garden Mid June

All of my started eggplants and tomato plants died as soon as they were planted. The only one that survived was a yellow tomato plant. Those things have proven very hardy and grow easily in this garden soil. Some of the hot pepper plants (poblano/anaheim) have done fine. They aren't thriving but at least they didn't wither away.

The herbs and flowers I planted in the cement blocks seem to be thriving. Thai basil didn't like it in those cement blocks though. So they've been replaced by other seeds.
